THE ANSWER TO HEALTHCARE EQUITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
The university’s commitment to cultivating diverse health professions leaders who are dedicated to social justice and health equity for underserved populations is in its creed. CDU’s footprint in Southern California and South Central Los Angeles is cemented in the ideal that we are who we teach.
The university’s vision to build a new Health Professions Education Building (HPEB) will help establish an in-house 4-year medical degree program located on its campus in South Los Angeles. The new facility will contain 100,000 gross square feet (GSF) of space for virtual and standard anatomy laboratories, common spaces for all students, collaborative faculty and staff offices, and learning environments to support 60+ medical students in the new College of Medicine. The new College, coupled with the university’s signature teaching methodology, the CDU Advantage, will be the centerpiece of our strategy to help alleviate healthcare disparities regionally, nationally, and worldwide.
To accommodate our university’s rapid growth, we need additional infrastructure to support a mid-size campus population of at least 2,000 students. The total cost of the building is estimated at $100 million, which will be funded by a mix of public/private partnerships, philanthropy, as well as governmental aid.
As an economic powerhouse in South Central Los Angeles, CDU’s new College of Medicine will stimulate over $90 million a year for the local economy through hiring, direct spending, and research funding initiatives. The latter being an essential component of our communication engagement strategy. Just as important, the new College’s inaugural class in 2027 is projected to create 749 jobs in Los Angeles County alone. Estimates show that over 80% of those graduates will more than likely return to practice and provide much-needed care in underserved communities such as those surrounding the university.
The new HPEB will not only enhance our attractiveness and reputation as a health professions university, it will also help us address our mission in a very direct way. Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2025.
